The sleep-story app with the best library of its kind and a fair 30-day refund window on web purchases, undermined by weak support and murky regional pricing.

Why C+: Excellent sleep and relaxation content, but a pricey lifetime tier, prices that shift by store and region, and a customer-service record that Trustpilot reviewers rate among the worst in the category.

Overall is the weighted mean of the five rows, adjusted by a small slug-seeded offset so that brands never line up in a false staircase, and capped at 9.8. Full working on the Methodology page (v2.1).
Key findings
In the US the trial page offers 7 days free, then $79.99 billed annually; the one-off Calm for Life plan is $499.99.
Calm’s own FAQ text offers refunds on yearly plans bought through calm.com or Google Play within 30 days; Apple purchases must go to Apple.
Prices vary sharply by region and store: the same plans page showed the desk a far lower lifetime price from outside the US, and the App Store lists several price points.
Calm’s family plan terms, last updated in 2021, still say the plan is available only in Australia and Canada, and the old family-plan URL now returns a 404.
What Calm sells
Calm is a San Francisco company whose app is built around sleep and relaxation. Calm Premium unlocks the whole library: a new Daily Calm meditation each day, more than 100 Sleep Stories with new ones added weekly, music for focus and sleep, masterclasses from outside experts and the Calm Body stretching videos. It is sold as an annual subscription, a monthly plan through the app stores, and a one-off lifetime purchase, and can be given as a gift. A Family Plan exists under separate terms. Calm Health, its business arm, sells psychologist-developed programs and mental health screening to employers and health plans. It suits people whose main problem is getting to sleep. It is a wellness product, not a treatment; anyone struggling should speak to a professional.

Calm Premium (annual) BUY
The US trial page lists a 7-day free trial, then $79.99 billed annually, with cancel-anytime wording. That buys the full library: the Daily Calm, Sleep Stories with new releases weekly, sleep and focus music, masterclasses and Calm Body sessions. The Sleep Stories are the reason to choose Calm over Headspace, and app-store reviewers single out its narrators. Calm’s FAQ text offers a refund within 30 days for yearly plans bought on calm.com or Google Play, which is better than most rivals. The weakness is a seven-day trial, half the length Headspace gives on its annual plan.
StrengthBest-in-class sleep content; 30-day refund window on web
WeaknessShort seven-day trial; app-store price may differ from web
A single payment of $499.99 on the US plans page for permanent Premium access. That equals more than six years of the annual plan, a long bet on any app, and Calm’s terms allow it to change or discontinue features. The 30-day refund wording on Calm’s site covers yearly subscriptions, not lifetime, so assume no way back. The desk also saw a much lower lifetime price when loading the same page from outside the US, so buyers in some regions face a very different calculation. In the US, the annual plan is the safer purchase.
StrengthNo renewals to remember
WeaknessOver six years of annual fees up front; refunds unlikely
Calm’s family terms give a primary account holder and up to five others Premium access; members need not be related but must all be 18 or over. The subscription is yearly, the fee does not change with how many seats you use, it cannot be paid with a Calm gift card, and fees are fully earned on payment. The catch is availability: the terms, last updated in 2021, say it is offered only in Australia and Canada, and the family-plan page the desk tried returned a 404. The desk did not find a price on a page it could read.
StrengthSix adult accounts, no need to be related
WeaknessLimited availability; adults only; no price found on pages read
Calm sells two gifts: ‘Gift a Year’ and ‘Gift a Lifetime’, redeemed through a calm.com redeem page. The gift page itself shows no price or terms, so check the linked gift-card page before buying. A gift avoids the trial-to-annual trap for the recipient, which is the most common complaint about Calm, and that is a real advantage. The drawbacks: gift cards cannot be used toward a Family Plan, the gift page gives no expiry or refund terms, and the lifetime gift carries the same long-term risk as buying lifetime for yourself.
StrengthRecipient avoids an auto-renewing trial
WeaknessNo price or terms on the gift page; not usable for Family
Calm’s business product, sold to employers, health plans and benefits consultants, with a lighter ‘Calm for Organizations’ option for employers under 300 staff. It adds psychologist-developed clinical programs, mental health screenings and referral plans pointing to an employer’s other benefits, on top of the consumer library. No prices or seat minimums are published; everything runs through a demo request. For an individual, the useful point is to check if your employer or insurer already provides it before paying. Calm positions it as wellness support, not a substitute for clinical care.
StrengthMay already be free through an employer or health plan
WeaknessNo published pricing; demo request required
Yearly plans refundable within 30 days on calm.com or Google Play; Apple via Apple
Support
Email support; Trustpilot reviewers report no phone line and automated replies
Payment options
Card on web; Apple and Google in-app; gift cards not valid for Family

Red flags
The 30-day refund only covers yearly plans bought on calm.com or Google Play. Trustpilot reviewers who bought through Apple and missed its window report being refused.
Trustpilot’s recurring complaints are charges after cancelling, renewals people did not expect, and paid Premium access disappearing or failing to unlock, often with only automated email replies.
Prices are not consistent: the App Store lists several price points for Premium and the web lifetime price shown varies dramatically by region, so compare before paying.
Calm’s terms state that payments are non-refundable except as the terms expressly provide, so anything outside the 30-day yearly window is at Calm’s discretion.
The customer record
App-store reviewers love Calm. It holds 4.8 from millions of ratings, and reviews praise the Sleep Stories, the soundscapes and particular narrators, with several people describing it as real help with anxiety and grief alongside therapy.
Trustpilot is bleak by comparison: a ‘Bad’ 1.4, heavily one-star, on an unclaimed profile where Calm has not invited reviews, so expect a skew. The complaints are about the business, not the content. Customers describe being charged after cancelling, being billed for an annual plan they say they never chose, and Premium access disappearing after payment. The second theme is support: no phone line, automated responses and long waits. A few satisfied long-term users appear, though one later reported an access problem too.
Compare against
Headspace
Pick this if you want structured meditation courses and a cheaper family plan.
Insight Timer
Pick this if you want a large free library of guided sessions and sleep music.
BetterSleep
Pick this if you mainly want customisable sleep sounds and tracking rather than stories.
Verdict
For sleep, Calm’s library is the strongest of its kind and the 30-day refund on yearly web purchases is a real safeguard. The trouble is the experience around it: inconsistent prices, a family plan that is hard to find, and support reviewers describe as automated and slow. Buy the annual plan on calm.com rather than through Apple, so the refund window applies, skip lifetime, and check if an employer already provides Calm Health. Verdict: CONSIDER.
