Findings in brief

  1. US prices run from $249.99 for Forerunner 70/170 and Instinct 3 to $999.99 and up for the new fēnix 9, with no subscription needed for core training features.
  2. Every Garmin.com order ships free in the US, and most orders of $199 or more get free second-day shipping after discounts.
  3. Garmin.com purchases can be returned within 30 days of receipt in original condition; custom products, opened software and downloads are non-refundable.
  4. The US warranty is one year, the customer pays transport, and Garmin may swap in a Garmin Recertified unit that carries only 90 days of cover.
  5. The warranty text excludes damage caused by water, which is worth knowing on watches marketed for swimming and diving.

Range overview

Garmin was founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao, runs its main operations from Olathe, Kansas, and is listed on the NYSE. It makes GPS devices for cars, boats and aircraft, but its fitness and outdoor wearables are what most consumers buy. The watch line is wide: Forerunner for running and triathlon, fēnix and Enduro for multisport and endurance, Instinct for rugged and tactical use, Venu and vívoactive for health-focused everyday wear, Lily for small wrists, plus golf, diving and kids’ watches and the new CIRQA band. All sync to the free Garmin Connect app. It suits runners, cyclists, hikers and triathletes who want long battery life and serious training metrics, and anyone who would rather pay once than subscribe.

fēnix 9 CONSIDER

The new flagship multisport watch starts at $999.99 on Garmin’s US site, with AMOLED or solar-charging displays and options that include inReach satellite connectivity. It is the watch for people who want everything Garmin makes on one wrist: mapping, multisport profiles, rugged build. The case against it is price and need. A Forerunner 970 covers the training features most runners use for $250 less, and the fēnix premium mostly buys materials, solar and satellite options. As a new release, early firmware updates are also likely to change behaviour in its first months.

StrengthEvery Garmin feature, with solar and satellite options
WeaknessStarts near $1,000; most buyers will not use the extra

Forerunner 970 BUY

Listed at $749.99, the Forerunner 970 is Garmin’s premium running and triathlon watch, with an AMOLED display, a built-in LED flashlight, enhanced navigation and its most advanced training and recovery features. For a serious runner or triathlete it is the best-balanced watch in the range: flagship training tools without fēnix pricing or bulk. The weakness is the price gap to the Forerunner 570, which shares much of the training software for $200 less, so buy the 970 only if you will use the maps and flashlight.

StrengthFlagship training tools in a lighter running-watch body
WeaknessCosts $200 more than the 570 for maps and flashlight

Forerunner 570 BUY

At $549.99, the Forerunner 570 brings an AMOLED display and Garmin’s advanced training and recovery features to a mid-priced running and triathlon watch. It is the sensible choice for most runners training for a race: the coaching, load and recovery metrics are the reason to buy Garmin at all, and they are here. It lacks the 970’s flashlight and fuller navigation. Garmin’s one-year US warranty is short for a watch at this price, and recent reviews describe out-of-warranty replacements offered at a cost rather than repairs.

StrengthMost of the 970’s training features for $200 less
WeaknessNo flashlight or full maps; one-year warranty only

Venu 4 CONSIDER

Venu 4 starts at $549.99 and is Garmin’s health-first smartwatch: a bright AMOLED display, built-in flashlight, wellness tracking and smart features, aimed at people who want an Apple Watch alternative with longer battery life. It is a good fit for daily health tracking and gym use. The problem is its position: it costs the same as the Forerunner 570, which is the stronger training watch, and the vívoactive 6 covers most daily health tracking for $250 less. Choose it for the design and smart features, not the fitness depth.

StrengthAttractive everyday watch with strong health tracking
WeaknessSame price as the better-equipped Forerunner 570

vívoactive 6 BUY

The vívoactive 6 lists at $299.99 and is the best-value entry into Garmin’s health and fitness ecosystem: GPS, a bright colour display, and the essential fitness, wellness and smart features. For someone moving from a basic tracker who wants sleep, heart rate and workout data with no subscription, it is the obvious pick. It leaves out the advanced training-readiness tools of the Forerunner line and the rugged build of Instinct. Reviews of the app note that recovery suggestions can feel generic for beginners.

StrengthCore Garmin health tracking at the lowest sensible price
WeaknessLacks the advanced training metrics serious athletes want

Instinct 3 BUY

Instinct 3 starts at $249.99 and is Garmin’s rugged GPS watch, with dedicated tactical features and a choice of solar-charging or AMOLED displays. For hikers, hunters and anyone hard on their kit it offers the core Garmin tracking in a tougher, cheaper case than fēnix. The solar versions trade screen quality for battery life, so pick carefully between the two display options. Remember that the warranty excludes accidental damage, which is the main way a rugged watch fails.

StrengthTough, affordable, with a solar option for long trips
WeaknessWarranty excludes accident damage, the main risk outdoors

Things to know before you buy

  • Warranty replacements can be Garmin Recertified units carrying 90 days of cover or the remainder of the first year, and the customer pays shipping to send the faulty watch in.
  • The warranty excludes damage caused by water, as well as accidents and cosmetic wear, which narrows protection on watches sold for swimming and outdoor use.
  • Recent Trustpilot reviews, mostly from the UK, describe first-line support ending chats unresolved and out-of-warranty fixes offered only as paid replacement units.
  • Retailer purchases follow the retailer’s own return terms, and Garmin notes restocking fees may apply there; US warranty claims on unauthorised resellers can be rejected.

Sentiment from reviews

Garmin’s main Trustpilot profile is unclaimed, carries a Dutch company name and scores 1.5, ‘Bad,’ from a little over three thousand reviews, with one-star reviews the clear majority. Read in October 2026, the recent reviews skew towards the UK and are about service rather than hardware: first-line support described as dismissive, warranty claims refused or met with an offer of a discounted refurbished replacement, and slow refunds. A few mention watches that stopped holding charge or sensors that failed after a software update. Even unhappy reviewers often concede the watches track accurately and last days on a charge.

The Garmin Connect app holds 4.4 on the US App Store from tens of thousands of ratings. Written reviews there are mostly feature requests, such as better yoga tracking and more control over personal records, plus complaints about layout changes.

Rivals worth a look

COROS

Pick this if you want long battery life and solid training metrics at a lower price than Garmin.

Apple Watch

Pick this if you use an iPhone and care more about smart features than multi-day battery life.

Polar

Pick this if you want a training-focused watch with a simpler app and a strong heart-rate heritage.

Final call

Garmin makes the most complete range of training watches available, and the core metrics come without a monthly fee, which sets it apart from WHOOP and Oura. Prices are clear, shipping is free and the 30-day return is fair. The weak points are after-sales: a one-year US warranty, recertified replacements and a support reputation that is poor where people bother to review it. For most buyers, the Forerunner 570 or vívoactive 6 is the right call. Verdict: BUY.

Brand verdict: BUY 7.6/10, grade B.
