A well-made meditation and sleep library with good family and student pricing, attached to a no-refund policy and a support operation its own reviewers rate badly.

Why C+: The app itself is polished and the annual, family and student prices are fair, but terms that refuse refunds and a poor record on billing complaints pull it to the middle.

Overall is the weighted mean of the five rows, adjusted by a small slug-seeded offset so that brands never line up in a false staircase, and capped at 9.8. Full working on the Methodology page (v2.1).
Findings in brief
The annual plan lists at $69.99 USD a year after a 14-day trial; monthly is $12.99 USD a month with only a 7-day trial.
The Family plan covers six people for $99.99 a year and includes Headspace for Kids, which makes it the best-value plan per person.
Headspace’s terms say subscriptions are not refundable unless the law requires it, and App Store and Google Play sales are final.
Ebb, the AI companion, remembers past conversations; Headspace says it is not monitored in real time by a human and is not clinical care.
The product line
Headspace is a US company whose app offers guided meditation, sleep content (including its long-form Sleepcasts), focus music and gentle movement. Consumer plans are annual, monthly, a six-person Family plan and a heavily discounted Student plan, plus gift subscriptions. Inside the app sits Ebb, an AI companion that talks through problems and suggests activities. Beyond the library, Headspace sells mental health coaching and, in the US only, therapy and psychiatry delivered by affiliated clinical groups; its terms describe Headspace itself as a technology platform rather than a healthcare provider. Employers buy it as a benefit too. This review covers the consumer subscription; nothing here is medical advice, and anyone in difficulty should speak to a licensed professional.

Annual plan BUY
Listed at $69.99 USD a year, or $5.83 a month equivalent, after a 14-day free trial. It unlocks the full library: daily meditations, courses for beginners, Sleepcasts, sleep sounds, focus music and movement sessions, plus Ebb. The structured courses suit people who want to learn the skill rather than just play rain sounds. The trial is the longest offered and the price is the lowest per month. The weakness is the conversion: after 14 days it becomes a non-refundable year, and the most common complaints on Trustpilot are about exactly that charge.
StrengthFull library at the lowest monthly equivalent, 14-day trial
Listed at $12.99 USD a month after a 7-day trial, half the trial length of the annual plan. Twelve months of it costs more than double the annual price, so it only makes sense for someone who wants a month or two of sleep content during a bad patch and is disciplined about cancelling. The terms say cancellation of a monthly subscription takes effect at the end of the month already paid, with no refund for that month. If you think you will still be using Headspace in six months, the annual or family plan is the obvious pick.
StrengthShort commitment for a temporary need
WeaknessOver twice the annual cost if kept a year; shorter trial
Six people on one account for $99.99 a year, each with their own access, and it includes Headspace for Kids and relationship-themed meditations. The owner pays, can swap members and sees payment history from the account page. Existing web subscribers get a prorated credit when switching; app-store and workplace subscribers are pointed to a help center FAQ. At about $17 a person when full, it is the best value in the range. The weakness is that the owner carries the charge and the help center that explains app-store transfers blocked automated reading during this research.
StrengthSix accounts for the price of under two individual plans
WeaknessSwitching from an app-store plan is less clear than from web
The student page lists $9.99 USD a year (with local prices in pounds, euros and other currencies) for students aged 18 or over in post-secondary education in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Portugal, Spain and, depending which part of the page you read, Germany. Verification runs through SheerID, with a manual document upload if instant checks fail; a school email is not required. It is the same full library at a small fraction of the normal price. There is no student-specific trial, and the eligibility list is inconsistent on the page itself.
StrengthFull library for a token annual price
WeaknessLimited countries; page contradicts itself on Germany
Ebb is included with the app rather than sold separately. You talk or type, it responds, suggests meditations and remembers earlier conversations so you can pick up where you left off. Headspace says conversations are encrypted, that clinical experts tested it for safety and that it can point users to crisis support. The terms limit it to adults and state it is AI, not a human, and provides no medical advice or mental health services. It can help sort thoughts after a bad day. Weigh the memory feature against how much you want stored about your mental state.
StrengthIncluded in the subscription; can route users to crisis support
WeaknessStores conversation history; not monitored by a human
Headspace sells text-based coaching and, in the US only, therapy and psychiatry through affiliated providers such as Headspace Medical Group. Outside the US, the terms limit access to the content library and coaching. Therapy fees are charged at the time of each appointment, and the desk did not find a consumer price for coaching or therapy on the pages it read. Coaches provide encouragement, not medical advice. It may suit someone who wants support inside an app they already use. Check insurance coverage first, and note that one recent Trustpilot reviewer reported a charge for a session that never happened.
StrengthCoaching and US therapy inside the same app
WeaknessPrices not published on pages read; US-only therapy
No refunds unless required by law; App Store and Google Play sales final
Support
Help center and email; Trustpilot notes no replies to negative reviews
Payment options
Card on web; Apple and Google in-app; HSA/FSA eligible per site banner
Subscription / cancellation
Auto-renews monthly or yearly; cancel before renewal; app-store plans cancel via Apple or Google

Red flags
The terms rule out refunds unless the law requires them, including after a trial converts to a year. Trustpilot’s most common complaint is an annual charge right after a trial.
A minority of reviews report being charged after cancelling or with auto-renew switched off, and say email support was slow or answered by an AI assistant that did not resolve the problem.
Ebb remembers what you have told it. Headspace says conversations are encrypted, but anyone uneasy about stored mental-health conversations should read the privacy policy before using it.
What customers say
The app-store picture is excellent: 4.8 from hundreds of thousands of ratings, with reviewers crediting Headspace with easing anxiety and helping them sleep, and beginners praising the courses. Requests are about features, chiefly AirPlay for Sleepcasts and longer walking sessions.
Trustpilot tells a different story from a much smaller sample. The profile sits at a ‘Bad’ 1.5, Headspace has not replied to negative reviews and has not invited customers recently, so it skews towards complaints. Those complaints are mostly about billing: annual charges straight after a trial, charges after cancelling, and refunds refused. A second strand covers a slow Android app and logouts. The positive minority likes the content and wants more of it.
Alternatives
Calm
Pick this if you mostly want sleep stories and music rather than structured meditation courses.
Insight Timer
Pick this if you want a large free library and are happy to skip structured courses.
Ten Percent Happier
Pick this if you want sceptic-friendly teaching from named meditation teachers.
Verdict
The content is excellent and the pricing is fair when you pick the right plan: annual for one, Family for a household, Student if you qualify. What holds it back is everything around the content. The terms refuse refunds, the trial rolls into a year, and the complaint record on billing is poor. Start the 14-day trial, decide by day 10, and cancel on the web if you are unsure. This is a wellness app, not treatment. Verdict: CONSIDER.
