Why C+: The chairs are as good as the category gets and the warranty is generous, but the direct store charges to return, charges for delivery, and draws a poor Trustpilot record on service.

Key findings

  1. The Aeron Chair runs from $1,775 to $2,840 on the US store, and new Aerons carry Herman Miller’s full 12-year warranty, covering continuous use.
  2. Returning a Herman Miller performance chair costs a $99 shipping fee, or 10% of the price if the packaging is gone; other items take a 10% restocking charge.
  3. Refurbished Aerons start at $795 with a 5-year warranty, but every refurbished chair is final sale; problems must be reported within three days of delivery.
  4. Standard delivery is 11% of order value with select chairs at a flat $99 each, though a free chair delivery promotion was running when read.
  5. The terms of sale pass risk of loss to the buyer when goods are handed to the carrier, and undelivered orders accrue $10 a day in storage after 10 days.

What Herman Miller sells

Herman Miller is the Michigan furniture maker behind the Aeron and the Eames Lounge Chair, now part of MillerKnoll alongside Knoll and Design Within Reach. Most of its office business runs through dealers, but store.hermanmiller.com sells direct in the US, with shipping to Canada and Puerto Rico. For home offices the core is performance seating: Aeron, Embody, Mirra 2, Sayl, Cosm and the cheaper Verus, plus gaming versions of the Aeron and Embody. There is a refurbished line of Aeron chairs at lower prices, sit-to-stand desks, storage and a large catalogue of mid-century home furniture. It suits buyers who want a chair that will last a decade and who value the warranty above the price.

Item verdicts

Aeron Chair BUY

The reference mesh chair, priced from $1,775 to $2,840 depending on size, back support, arms and finish. It comes in three sizes, which matters more than any option: buying the right size is the single biggest factor in comfort. New Aerons carry the full 12-year warranty, and Herman Miller pays for warranty work in the US and Canada. It is very expensive, and a return costs $99 even unused, so sit in one at a store first if you can. For buyers who will keep a chair ten years, the cost per year is easier to defend than the sticker suggests.

StrengthThree sizes and a 12-year warranty that covers continuous use
WeaknessCosts $1,775 or more, and a return still costs $99

Refurbished Aeron Chair BUY

The smartest buy on the store. Herman Miller’s own refurbished Aerons cost $945, or $795 to $815 for the Aeron Chair - Classic, restored with authentic parts and backed by a 5-year refurbished warranty. The current-generation chair has the improved PostureFit SL support and 8Z Pellicle mesh; the Classic has the older, simpler tilt. The catches are real: refurbished chairs are final sale, configuration options are limited to what is in stock, and damage or defects must be reported within three days of delivery. Inspect it the day it arrives.

StrengthAn Aeron for roughly half the new price, with factory backing
WeaknessFinal sale, and only three days to report a problem

Embody Chair CONSIDER

Herman Miller’s most expensive mainstream task chair at $2,230 to $2,705. It is built for long sitting with a flexible back that follows the spine, and it has a loyal following among people who work very long days. The price is the obstacle: it costs more than a high-spec Aeron, and its comfort is more about preference than measurable advantage. It takes the same $99 return fee as other performance chairs, so a disappointed buyer pays to find out. Try one in person first; if that is not possible, a well-specced Aeron or a Steelcase Leap is the lower-risk purchase.

StrengthHighly regarded for very long sitting sessions
WeaknessOver $2,200 for a feel that is down to preference

Mirra 2 Chair CONSIDER

The middle of the range at $1,365 to $1,915. It is a lighter, more flexible chair than the Aeron, with a polymer back, and it suits people who find the Aeron’s seat edge or mesh firm. It earns praise in owner reviews for comfort over years of use. The trouble is the pricing gap: a fully optioned Mirra 2 costs more than a basic Aeron, and a refurbished Aeron costs much less than either. It makes most sense for buyers who have sat in both and prefer it, or who need features the cheaper Aeron configurations lack.

StrengthFlexible back that suits people who dislike the Aeron
WeaknessOptioned up, it costs more than a base Aeron

Sayl Chair CONSIDER

The entry point to Herman Miller’s performance seating, from $935 to $1,580, with its distinctive suspension-bridge back. It is the cheapest way to get a new Herman Miller task chair with the full warranty. Owner opinion is less settled than for the Aeron: an October 2026 Trustpilot review found it uncomfortable over long days and noted a sharp edge on the base, which echoes a wider sense that the design leads and the support follows. At over $1,000 when optioned, it competes with Steelcase Leap pricing, and the Leap is the stronger long-day chair.

StrengthCheapest new Herman Miller with the full warranty
WeaknessComfort over long days draws mixed reports

Embody Gaming Chair SKIP

A gaming-styled Embody at a single price of $2,395, which is $165 more than the starting price of the standard Embody Chair. It keeps the Embody’s long-sitting design with gaming-oriented styling and colours. The store does run a gaming chair quiz and guide and offered free delivery on gaming chairs when read. But unless the specific look matters, the standard Embody offers the same core design and more configuration choice for less. Gaming does not change what a task chair needs to do, and nothing on the product listing justifies the premium on its own.

StrengthEmbody design with gaming styling
WeaknessCosts more than the standard Embody for similar function

Things to know before you buy

  • No return is free: performance chairs cost $99 to send back, or 10% without packaging, and every other item loses 10% of its price.
  • Refurbished chairs, floor samples and outlet items are final sale, with only three days from delivery to report damage or a defect.
  • Risk of loss passes to the buyer when the order is handed to the carrier, and orders not accepted within 10 days incur $10 a day in storage.

Review themes

The product and the store are judged very differently. Owners of the Aeron, Mirra 2 and Embody describe chairs still comfortable after many years, and a couple of Trustpilot reviewers praise warranty repairs, including one carried out on site after a long trip by the engineer.

The store itself scores poorly. The hermanmiller.com profile on Trustpilot sat at 2.0 from 183 reviews when read in October 2026, with one-star reviews the clear majority, on an unclaimed profile that has never asked customers for reviews, so the sample leans toward complaints. Even so, the themes are consistent: chairs that arrived looking used or reboxed, desk parts missing or damaged, refunds that only came after escalation, and emails left unanswered for weeks. The store.hermanmiller.com profile had no reviews at all. Expect a good chair and be ready to chase the paperwork.

Rivals worth a look

Steelcase

Pick this if you want a comparable flagship chair with free returns in the contiguous US.

Branch

Pick this if you want strong adjustment for a fraction of the price and accept a shorter warranty.

Uplift Desk

Pick this if you need a standing desk to go with the chair and want well-reviewed phone support.

Verdict

Herman Miller still makes some of the best office chairs money can buy, and the 12-year warranty is the strongest argument for paying the price. Buying direct is the weak link: returns always cost something, delivery is charged, and the public record on service is poor. The best value here is a refurbished Aeron, if you can accept final sale. For a new chair, try it in person first, then buy where returns are kinder. Verdict: CONSIDER.

Brand verdict: CONSIDER 6.6/10, grade C+.
