Brand Verdicts Methodology

MasterClass Verdict (2026)

Beautifully produced celebrity classes that inspire more than they teach, sold annually with a fair 30-day guarantee and a renewal process that generates most of the complaints.

What the research shows

  1. Class pages say membership starts at $10 a month, billed annually; there is no monthly web plan, so the whole year is charged at once.
  2. The Terms give a refund within 30 days of the first purchase, but renewal payments are non-refundable and there are no credits for partly used periods.
  3. Trustpilot sits at 1.6 'Bad', split between five-star and one-star reviews, with the one-star side dominated by unexpected renewals and hard-to-reach refunds.
  4. A separate Certificates subscription adds graded coursework, partly marked by AI, and must stay active until you finish or progress stalls.
  5. Purchases through Apple or Google fall under the app store’s refund policy, not MasterClass’s 30-day guarantee.

Range overview

MasterClass is a privately held San Francisco company, founded in 2015 by David Rogier and Aaron Rasmussen, that sells an annual subscription to video classes taught by famous practitioners: chefs, writers, athletes, film-makers, business leaders and scientists. The plans page claims 200+ classes with new ones added monthly, watchable on desktop, phone and TV apps, with an audio-only mode. Classes are sets of short lessons; Gordon Ramsay’s cooking class, for example, has 20 lessons over 3 hours 54 minutes. Membership is sold in Individual, Duo and Family versions and as gifts. Paid extras include Certificates and a product called On Call, which carries its own 7-day refund window. It suits people who want inspiration and insight from a name they admire, not step-by-step skills training.

The products, scored

5 items. Each chip is a per-product call and can differ from the brand verdict.

Individual membership CONSIDER

The entry plan: every class on one account. Class pages state that membership starts at $10 a month, billed annually, and the app-store listings show a different annual figure, so check the price at checkout. There is no monthly option on the web, so this is a single yearly payment, refundable within 30 days of the first purchase under the Terms. Production is the selling point, with film-quality lessons from people such as Gordon Ramsay. The weakness is depth: lessons favour stories and philosophy over structured practice, so many members watch a handful of classes and then forget the subscription until it renews.

StrengthFilm-quality lessons from instructors you will not find elsewhere
WeaknessAnnual-only billing; renewals are not refundable

Duo and Family plans CONSIDER

Higher tiers for sharing across more people and devices. Duo and Family plans cost more than Individual on annual billing; MasterClass’s own plans page would not load for this review, so confirm the figure at checkout. Per person, Family is the better deal if several people in a household will actually use it. The pages read did not set out device and stream limits per tier, so confirm them at checkout. Upgrades are new purchases with their own terms, and add-ons auto-renew alongside the subscription. If only one person in the house is keen, the extra cost buys nothing.

StrengthLower cost per person for a household that shares it
WeaknessTier limits not clearly stated on the pages read

Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking BUY

A good test of what a MasterClass is: 20 lessons, 3 hours 54 minutes in total, from one of the most recognisable chefs on television. The class page frames it as part of the membership from $10 a month billed annually, covered by the 30-day money-back guarantee. It is entertaining and the technique segments are clear, and for someone who will also watch the other cooking classes it justifies the year. It is not a cookery course in the structured sense. There is no feedback, and the pace assumes you will pause and practise on your own.

StrengthClear technique demonstrations with high production values
WeaknessNo structure, feedback or practice plan around the videos

Certificates SKIP

A newer paid layer sold as a one-time purchase or as its own recurring subscription. The Terms say a certificate recognises completion of a MasterClass service, is not a degree or professional credential, and that quizzes, written responses and projects may be graded partly by AI. On the subscription version, if it lapses before you finish you cannot complete it until you resubscribe, with no guarantee of partial credit. Refunds are available for 30 days or until a certificate is granted, whichever comes first. Paying extra for a non-accredited credential on top of an annual plan is hard to justify.

StrengthAdds graded assignments to otherwise passive viewing
WeaknessNot a recognised credential; lapses stall progress

Gift subscriptions CONSIDER

MasterClass sells gift memberships, a plausible present for someone who loves a particular chef or author. The Terms state that refunds of gift subscriptions are governed by separate Gift Subscription Terms and Conditions, not the standard 30-day policy, so read those before buying. The bigger issue arrives a year later: the dominant Trustpilot complaint is a forgotten membership renewing onto a card. Before giving one, check whether the recipient will be asked for payment details and, if so, tell them to switch off auto-renewal at once.

StrengthA distinctive present for a fan of a specific instructor
WeaknessSeparate refund terms; renewal risk passes to the recipient

The small print, summarized

ShippingDigital only; web, mobile and TV apps, plus audio-only mode
ReturnsRefund within 30 days of first purchase; renewals and partly used periods non-refundable
Warranty / guarantee30-day satisfaction guarantee on annual memberships; none after that
Supportsupport@masterclass.com and online help center; reviewers report chatbot first, no phone
Payment optionsCard on masterclass.com; Apple and Google in-app, refunded under their own policies
Subscription / cancellationAnnual, auto-renews; advance notice where the law requires; cancel any time

Values are short phrases taken from the brand's own pages at the time of the last update. "Not stated" means the desk could not find the policy in writing.

Caveats

  • Renewal payments are non-refundable under the Terms. Many one-star reviews describe a full annual charge landing after the member believed they had cancelled or forgot the date.
  • Support replies on Trustpilot are largely templated, pointing complainants to support@masterclass.com; reviewers describe chatbot loops and slow follow-up.
  • Subscriptions bought in the iOS or Android app follow Apple’s or Google’s refund rules, so the 30-day guarantee may not apply.
  • Several add-ons, including Certificates and PDF workbooks according to one reviewer, are sold separately on top of the membership.

Sentiment from reviews

MasterClass’s Trustpilot profile reads 1.6 'Bad' at the time of reading, and the distribution is polarised: a large block of five-star reviews and a slightly larger block of one-star ones, with little in between. MasterClass replies to most negative reviews, usually with a templated message pointing to its support email. The one-star reviews are about billing, not content: renewals described as unauthorised, cancellations that did not seem to take, an account showing no active membership while charges continued, and chatbot replies that went in circles. A few report that a refund did arrive, quickly in one case and after several follow-ups in another.

The App Store tells the opposite story, with a 4.9 average across a very large number of ratings, and reviewers praising the content and the chance to learn from people they admire.

Final call

MasterClass is the best-looking product in online learning and the instructor list is unique. It is entertainment with useful ideas rather than training, so value depends on how many classes you will actually watch in a year. The 30-day guarantee is a fair way to find out. After that, every renewal is final, and the complaint record shows how often people are caught. Buy on the web, not in an app, and turn off auto-renewal on day one. Verdict: CONSIDER.

Brand verdict: CONSIDER 6.4/10, grade C.
