Brand Verdicts Methodology

Oura Verdict (2026)

The most refined smart ring on sale, tied to a monthly membership and a warranty that treats the battery, the part owners complain about most, as a consumable.

Main findings

  1. Oura Ring 5 lists at $399 in Silver on Oura’s US store and Ring 4 at $349; both need a $5.99 monthly or $69.99 yearly membership for the full app.
  2. Oura’s warranty article lists batteries as consumable parts that are not covered, while battery failure around the one-year mark is the most common 1-star complaint on Trustpilot.
  3. Returns run 30 days from receipt for undamaged rings bought direct, but you get one return or one exchange, never both, and original shipping is not refunded.
  4. Support chat is open 24/7 but begins with Finn, a virtual assistant; phone help is a scheduled call, weekdays 9 AM to 4 PM Pacific, English only.

What Oura sells

Oura is a Finnish company (Oura Health Oy, founded in Oulu) that sells a titanium smart ring and the subscription app that interprets it. The current line is Oura Ring 5, launched in mid-2026 and about 40 percent smaller than its predecessor, and Oura Ring 4, which stays on sale below it. The ring tracks sleep, heart rate, HRV, temperature trends, blood oxygen and activity, and the app turns that into daily Sleep, Readiness and Activity scores plus newer features such as Symptom Radar and an AI Advisor. Membership is sold monthly or yearly and most insights sit behind it. Oura filed publicly for a Nasdaq listing in September 2026. It suits people who want sleep and recovery data without a screen on their wrist, and who accept a recurring fee.

Oura Ring 5 CONSIDER

The new flagship lists at $399 in Silver on Oura’s US store, with Stealth, Brushed Silver, Gold and Deep Rose finishes also offered. Oura claims 6 to 9 days per charge, a width of 6.09 mm and water resistance to 100 m. Independent launch reviews praised its overnight heart-rate and sleep-stage accuracy. The case against buying on day one is practical: the faster-charging Charging Case is sold separately, sizes run only 6 to 13, and anyone on Ring 4 gets most new software features anyway. Membership is extra on top of the hardware.

StrengthSmallest Oura yet with the longest claimed battery life
WeaknessCharging case extra; narrower size range than Ring 4

Oura Ring 4 BUY

Ring 4 lists at $349 in Silver on Oura’s US store and remains the better-value way into the platform now that Ring 5 exists. It is all titanium, claims 5 to 8 days of battery, is water resistant to 100 m and comes with a size-specific charger and USB-C cable. The size range is wider (4 to 15), which matters if Ring 5 does not fit. The weakness is the one Trustpilot keeps repeating: rings whose battery fades within a year, and a warranty that classes the battery as a consumable rather than a defect.

StrengthSame app and features as Ring 5 for less money
WeaknessBattery fade is the leading complaint and the warranty excludes it

Oura Membership CONSIDER

Membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US before tax, £5.99 or £69.99 in the UK and €5.99 or €69.99 in the EU, both after tax. New members get the first month free. It unlocks the detailed insights, Oura Advisor and new features as they arrive; without it Oura says the experience is “much more limited.” Data stays in your account if you cancel and can be exported as CSV. Paying yearly is the obvious choice. The catch is cost of ownership: over three years the fee approaches the price of the ring.

StrengthYearly plan is reasonable; data export available after cancelling
WeaknessMost of the value sits behind a fee that never ends

Extended protection plan SKIP

On the US product pages Oura includes a 1-year protection plan and offers upgrades to two years for $45 or three years for $60, labelling the three-year option “Most popular.” Oura’s help centre describes the Extend plan as US-only and something that must be added at purchase. Given that the standard warranty treats the battery as a consumable, buyers should read the Extend terms on battery coverage before paying, because the battery is what fails most. The desk could not confirm that coverage, so treat the upsell with caution until you have.

StrengthCheap relative to the ring if it covers battery failure
WeaknessUS only, purchase-time only, battery coverage not confirmed

Sizing Kit BUY

Oura sends a free sizing kit before you commit, and you should use it. The product page says Oura sizes differ slightly from standard ring sizes, half sizes do not exist, and you should wear the plastic sizer for at least 24 hours, including overnight, choosing the smaller size if between two. Ring 5 also uses different sizing from Ring 4, so an old kit will mislead. Kits are labelled by generation. The weakness is time: the kit adds days before the ring ships, and sizing errors remain a recurring theme in reviews.

StrengthFree, and it prevents the most avoidable return
WeaknessAdds days to delivery; Ring 4 and Ring 5 sizes differ

Things to know before you buy

  • The warranty article lists batteries as consumable parts and excludes them, yet early battery failure is the most common theme in recent 1-star Trustpilot reviews.
  • Oura may disable the original ring once a warranty replacement is approved, and replacements cannot be returned or refunded; do not sell or gift a ring you have claimed on.
  • A proposed class action filed in August 2026 in the Northern District of California alleges overstated sleep-stage accuracy for Ring 4; Oura disputes it and no class has been certified.
  • Retailer purchases (Amazon, John Lewis and others) fall under the retailer’s own return terms, not Oura’s 30-day policy.

The customer record

Trustpilot shows Oura at 4.0, “Great,” from a little over five thousand reviews, but the distribution is split: a clear majority of five-star reviews and a large block of one-star reviews with little in between. Happy owners talk about comfort, sleep data that changed their habits and support agents who replaced a faulty ring quickly, sometimes after the warranty had ended. The most recent one-star reviews, read in October 2026, are dominated by batteries that faded or died within about a year, compensation offers framed as a discount on a new ring, and AI-first chat that makes reaching a person hard. Oura’s profile says it has replied to only a small share of negative reviews.

The iOS app holds a 4.9 average from hundreds of thousands of ratings, with complaints there centred on occasional crashes and sync problems rather than the ring itself.

If not Oura, then

WHOOP

Pick this if you train hard and want strain and recovery coaching on a strap rather than a ring.

Samsung Galaxy Ring

Pick this if you use a Samsung phone and want a smart ring with no monthly membership fee.

Garmin

Pick this if you want sleep data plus GPS workouts on a watch with no required subscription.

Our call

Oura makes the best smart ring available and Ring 5 refines it further. The business around it is weaker: a fee that unlocks most of the app, a one-year US warranty that excludes the battery, and support that front-loads a bot. Ring 4 at its current price, used inside the 30-day window to check fit and battery life, is the sensible entry. Buy it knowing the subscription is permanent and the battery is your risk. Verdict: CONSIDER.

Brand verdict: CONSIDER 7.3/10, grade B−.
